Lower power, wider coverage, stronger networking — your next-generation IoT product starts here

Bluetooth 5.4 is here — is your product ready?
The ALX420A Bluetooth module now fully supports Bluetooth 5.4 — bringing faster throughput, longer range, larger networks, and future-proof LE Audio capabilities right into the module in your hands. We are not just launching a product; we are paving a shortcut for your IoT upgrade.

01  Why Now, and Why ALX420A

Bluetooth is no longer just about 'getting connected.' From 5.0 to 5.4, every specification update addresses real engineering pain points: slow throughput, short range, complex networking, and power that just won't come down. ALX420A delivers all of these capabilities to you at once:

Faster — no more data traffic jams

The LE 2M PHY doubles the data rate, making firmware upgrades, bulk provisioning, and audio streaming far smoother. No more compromising on experience because of slow transfers.

Farther — seamless signal coverage

The LE Coded PHY brings significant range gains. For large spaces such as warehouses, factories, and buildings, single-hop coverage is wider, fewer relay nodes are needed, and deployment costs drop.

Bigger — Mesh makes devices truly networked

Bluetooth Mesh supports many-to-many communication; a smartphone can configure it directly without an extra gateway. The network is self-organizing and self-healing — a single node failure does not affect the whole. This means your smart home, commercial lighting, and building-sensor projects can scale smoothly from small deployments to tens of thousands of devices.

More efficient — dramatically longer battery life

BLE connected state draws as little as 211 μA, and deep sleep only 2.69 μA. For battery-powered sensors, beacons, and wearables, this means 'install it and forget about battery changes.'

02  Proof of Strength: Infineon's AIROC Platform

We know customers want more than a 'claims to support' label — they want real compliance. The Infineon AIROC CYW20706 chip used in ALX420A is explicitly stated in its official datasheet (002-19479 Rev. *E) to:

"Complies with Bluetooth Core Specification version 5.4 including BR/EDR/Bluetooth LE"

In other words, Bluetooth 5.4 is not a feature we 'patched together' via firmware; it is a capability the chip natively possesses at the hardware and protocol-stack level. Choosing ALX420A means you get a compliance commitment from the silicon vendor — not a verbal promise.

Chip Platform Overview

The CYW20706 is built on a 40nm CMOS low-power process, integrating an Arm Cortex-M3 processor, 848 KB ROM and 352 KB RAM, in a 49-ball FCBGA package (4.5 × 4.0 × 1.0 mm) — compact, low-power, with ample on-chip resources, ideal as a module's main controller.

03  Technical Deep Dive: Dissecting Bluetooth 5.x Capabilities One by One

Below we break down the key Bluetooth 5.x capabilities supported by ALX420A, to help you evaluate them against your design choices.

3.1  PHY Upgrades: LE 2M and LE Coded

Bluetooth 5.0 introduced two new modulation schemes at the PHY layer. The LE 2M PHY raises the symbol rate from 1 Msym/s to 2 Msym/s, doubling theoretical throughput to about 2 Mbps (≈1.4 Mbps payload), making firmware upgrades, bulk provisioning, and audio streaming smoother. The LE Coded PHY takes a different path: using S=2 / S=8 forward error correction to trade bandwidth for range — at S=8 the rate drops to 500 kbps, but link budget improves by about 12 dB, delivering roughly 4× the range of uncoded mode, ideal for large spaces such as warehouses, factories, and buildings.

3.2  Extended Advertising

Legacy advertising data is under 31 bytes and can only be sent on 3 primary advertising channels. Bluetooth 5.0's Extended Advertising turns the primary-channel packets into 'pointers' that carry the real data on the remaining 37 secondary channels, so a single advertising payload can exceed 200 bytes. In a Mesh network this means each transmission carries more data, reducing relay hops, latency, and power, while letting beacons broadcast richer location and sensor information.

3.3  LE Power Control

Introduced in Bluetooth 5.2, LE Power Control lets master and slave devices adjust transmit power in real time after connection (in 1 dB steps, roughly -20 to +20 dBm). On the device side, this means lowering Tx power when close to save energy and reduce interference with other devices, or raising it when far away or obstructed to hold the link — optimizing coverage and coexistence in both directions.

3.4  LE Isochronous Channels and the Foundation of LE Audio

Added in Bluetooth 5.2, LE Isochronous Channels support time-synchronized data streams in both connected (CIS) and broadcast (BIS) states, forming the protocol foundation of the LE Audio standard (multi-stream audio, broadcast audio, hearing-aid enhancement). ALX420A's dual-mode capability gives it a head start for next-generation audio devices.

3.5  New in Bluetooth 5.4: PAwR and Encrypted Advertising

As the core version of this compliance release, Bluetooth 5.4 brings two key capabilities: Periodic Advertising with Responses (PAwR) lets a single advertiser exchange low-power, two-way messages with thousands of synchronized devices — the foundation for large-scale scenarios such as Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL); Encrypted Advertising Data (EAD) enables end-to-end encryption of advertising payloads, boosting security for beacon-class applications. Together they give 5.4 unique value in retail, logistics, and asset-tracking scenarios.

3.6  Bluetooth Mesh Protocol Mechanism

Bluetooth Mesh is based on 'Managed Flood': relay nodes forward messages, which carry a TTL that decrements hop by hop and are de-duplicated via cache — inherently free of single points of failure, self-organizing and self-healing. Low Power Nodes (LPN) pair with a Friend node, sleeping most of the time and waking only briefly when the Friend has cached a message for them, enabling Mesh access at extremely low power. Proxy nodes bridge GATT / smartphones, letting ordinary phones configure the network without a Mesh protocol stack. Combined with Extended Advertising, the configuration and O&M cost of a Mesh network is greatly reduced.
